Can I Get Veneers If I Grind My Teeth at Night?

Jessica T.Oct 8, 2026

I naturally have white, straight teeth and have undergone orthodontic treatment for most of my life. However, I grind my teeth heavily while sleeping, which has caused them to become very flat and worn down.

I have already gone through three retainers in the past year because of my teeth grinding.

I am interested in composite bonding because I would like my teeth to look bigger, whiter, and more symmetrical. I would also be willing to wear a night guard to protect the results.

Would composite bonding be suitable for me, or would porcelain veneers be a better option?

ANSWER

Based on your dental history, you appear to have significant bruxism (teeth grinding), which has already caused noticeable tooth wear and damage to multiple retainers.

Because you have broken or worn through three retainers within one year, there is a high risk that composite bonding could chip, fracture, or wear down prematurely due to the excessive pressure placed on your teeth during sleep.

For this reason, we would generally prefer porcelain laminate veneers over composite bonding in your case, provided that your remaining enamel, bite, and tooth structure are suitable.

Porcelain veneers may provide better resistance to staining and wear than composite bonding while helping restore the length, shape, and overall appearance of your teeth. However, severe grinding can still damage porcelain restorations, so managing your bruxism is essential.

Proposed Treatment Plan

  • 20 porcelain laminate veneers for teeth 15–25 and 31–35, 41–45

  • Masseter Botox treatment, if clinically appropriate, to help reduce excessive jaw muscle activity and clenching forces

  • A custom-made night guard to help protect the veneers from grinding-related damage during sleep

The aim of this treatment would be to restore the length of your worn teeth, create fuller and more balanced tooth proportions, and achieve a brighter, more harmonious smile.

Because you have previously undergone extensive orthodontic treatment, we would also need to evaluate whether your current bite is stable and whether ongoing orthodontic retention is required.

It is important to understand that porcelain veneers are not completely resistant to grinding, and Masseter Botox does not guarantee that bruxism will stop. A properly fitted protective night guard and regular dental follow-up will remain important for maintaining your results.

Before proceeding, a detailed clinical examination, bite analysis, and assessment of the severity of tooth wear will be necessary to determine whether veneers are suitable or whether additional treatment is required to protect your teeth long-term.
