George W.Aug 21, 2026

I am 83 years old and have atrial fibrillation, which is currently controlled with medication.

Am I suitable for dental implant treatment, and what precautions would be required because of my heart condition and medications?

ANSWER

Your age alone does not automatically prevent dental implant treatment. However, because you have atrial fibrillation, your current cardiac status and medications must be carefully reviewed before any surgical procedure.

We first need to confirm whether you are taking a blood thinner such as apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, warfarin, or another anticoagulant.

It is very important that you do not stop or change your blood-thinning medication on your own. If any adjustment to the timing or dosage is required before implant surgery, this must be decided together with your cardiologist or prescribing physician.

Before treatment, we would require written cardiology clearance confirming that your heart rhythm, blood pressure, and overall cardiac condition are stable enough for implant surgery.

Proposed Treatment Plan

For the lower jaw, the plan may include:

  • Dental implants in the regions of teeth 35, 36, 44, and 46

  • 12 zirconia restorations for teeth 36–31 and 41–46

For the upper jaw, the remaining teeth may require full extraction. The implant plan will depend on the amount and quality of available bone seen on the X-ray and three-dimensional CBCT scan.

Depending on the bone condition, the upper jaw may be treated with:

  • All-on-6 implant treatment, or

  • All-on-4 implant treatment

  • A fixed hybrid prosthesis supported by the implants

Because of your age and cardiac history, the final treatment plan should only be confirmed after reviewing your medications, cardiology clearance, blood pressure, general health, and three-dimensional dental imaging.

If your atrial fibrillation is well controlled, your cardiovascular condition is stable, and your cardiologist approves the procedure, implant treatment may still be considered.
